Best Metal Genre (Without Power Metal)

Ok, so... Here's the question... What is your favourite metal genre??? I know there was another poll on that, but I decided to remove Power Metal...

My vote go to Thrash Metal...

Thrash Metal - Slayer
Death Metal - Death
Black Metal - Darkthrone
Doom Metal - Solstice
Nu-Metal - Slipknot
Rap Metal - Rage Against The Machine
Melodeath Metal - Children Of Bodom
Progressive Metal - Dream Theater
Alternative Metal - System Of A Down
Viking Metal - [Theme] Metalhead123 was right
Folk Metal - Finntroll
Pagan Metal - [Theme]
Christian Metal - [Theme]
Speed Metal - Megadeth [Thrash-Speed]
Metalcore - All That Remains
Grindcore - Napalm Death

Industrial Metal - Marilyn Manson
Neo-Classical Metal - Yngwie Malsmsteen

Thrash is my alltime favorite genre but my top 5 is mainly heavy. If anyone votes grindcore................ I might have to kill you I'll be very disappointed in you.

Christian, Pagan and Viking are NOT genres. They're just themes.

As I've said before, I've defended power metal countless number of times when people say, "Oh, that shit isn't metal." Yeah? Well, please enlighten me. What is it? It doesn't sound like country to me. It ain't rap.....I do believe it would be metal. Albeit, a subgenre that you might not care for, but that doesn't make it any less metal.

The same goes here. You might not like it, but that doesn't change the fact that it is a type of metal.

Bugger off. So what I have an opinion that Nu Metal isn't actually Metal.

It's Alternative Metal mixed with Funk and Rap.
Alternative Metal basically = Alternative to Metal, thus meaning it cannot be Metal.

If you wanna play Wiki definitions:
Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music[1] that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in England and the United States.[2] With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are generally associated with masculinity and machismo.

Where are the Solos and emphatic beats in Nu Metal? Nowhere. So really, Wiki contradicts itself in calling Nu Metal part of Heavy Metal.

Each Subgenre of Heavy Metal takes from those characteristics, whereas Nu Metal does not.

Think about this, you're actually comparing Nu Metal to Power Metal. That doesn't seen kind of stupid to you?

Anyway, to finish it, Slipknot = Not Metal. Limp Bizkit = Not Metal. KoRn = Not Metal (yet I don't mind them) Oh, and Disturbed aren't even Nu Metal to begin with.

Progressive Metal here.
If you think about it, progressive is opening every closed door and allowing yourself the possibility for ANYTHING.
Technically speaking, most metal bands have been progressive now and then.

After power metal, melodeath (Norther, Amon Amarth, Insomnium, etc) is probably my favorite, with viking/folk metal at third.

Although viking metal is really just black metal or melodeath with mild folk melodies and viking-related themes.

Yes I know but I still usually count it as a metal genre. Well the vote goes to Death metal then.

i was between Metalcore and Melodeath but in the end i went for the first one as it is my fav (aggressive lyrics and all these stuff ). I dont really agree that the core genres or nu-metal do not belong in the metal genres. It is true that nu-metal songs dont have solos or riffs but they follow the sound and style of heavy metal or any other subgenre of this kind. I dont think they should be categorised in another genre when there are too many similarities in the sound. Besides there are many bands such as At The Gates or Parkway Drive which are trully related to the metal genre although they are categorised in a Core sub-genre.

Anyway thats always my opinion. I just believe none genre is better than the other. There are just bands who suck and others who sound awesome. Everything else is just a matter of taste.

At The Gates are Melodic Death Metal in it's purest form, never core. They were doing Melodic Death Metal before In Flames, Carcass and Dark Tranquillity.

I agree, At the Gates is pure Melodic Death Metal.
The only thing that I despise about Metalcore really are its use of the most annoying Clean vocals in the world.

Just because it doesn't have "metal" at the end doesn't automatically make it bad...
God, it's amazing how many people just assume 'core genres are automatically bad.

Death and Thrash metal definitly, with Prog coming in on a third place just because of Control Denied's Fragile Art of Existence. Gotta love Tim+Chuck combo.


Btw, aren't Rap Metal and Nu-Metal the same thing? Slipknot and Limp Bizkit being considered Nu-Metal rap alot in their songs so wouldn't they also be called Rap Metal because of it?

Rap Metal is just rap influenced.
Nu-Metal takes influence from hip hop, rap, alternative, and whatever. In a way it's a poor-ear's form of progressive metal without the complexities.

Rap Metal is Rap on a Metal soundtrack... Nu-Metal is more advanced... It is a mix of Rapcore and Alternative Metal.
