I dunno about most of their stuff but these guys are the founders of Viking themed Metal so i'd say they deserve a topic.
This video is EPIC!!

Bathory's one of my favorite bands. Btw what subgenre would you guys consider Bathory's Viking Metal? Musically I mean regardless of the Viking theme

Maybe you should check out their critically panned Thrash album. Or their buzzy debut.
Seriously, Bathory's a band for fans of more atmospheric music, I am a HUGE, HUGE Bathory fan, and one of the things i've beat myself up for is not meeting Quorthon before his death.

Hammerheart, Blood on Ice, Twilight of the Gods, and Nordland I and II are mainly Viking Metal(or blackened folk metal, if like many people, you think viking metal isn't a subgenre). Before these albums, it was Black Metal. Anyway, Viking metal is inspired of black metal and is folk influenced.

The only trash albums of Bathory were Requiem and Octagon. Which were his 2 worst albums.
My point of view.

I see Viking Metal simply as Viking Themed Metal not a real genre like Christian Metal its just the theme not the style of music. Ive heard people consider Bathory's Viking metal as Folk Metal and sometimes Power Metal some people say its just regular Heavy Metal I never really knew what to consider it. I just dont hear anything remotely Black Metal in Bathory's Viking Metal and isnt Folk Metal stuff like Korpiklanni, Finntroll, Alestorm, Turisas and all that? I dont see how Bathory sounds anything like that.

Look, I will post 2 videos of other Pagan Themed Black/Folk Metal bands. They kinda sound like Bathory.
Temnozor:
Primordial:
Still, a band doesn't need to sound like another to be part of a genre. Of course Bathory doesn't sound like Korpiklaani, but they can be part of Folk Metal. Same goes with Black Metal. Black Metal is large you know, it's not only about speed and agressivity.
