Their genre in my opinion, can't be defined. They have a different sound every album. I guess that's what makes them Progressive. But i don't think they're really power. Maybe some stuff on the "six degrees of inner turbulence" album.

I dont really like the fact they change every album. and Petrucci isnt exactly my favourite guitarist. but still, I have heard some songs and they are okay, but i dont hate them.

I quite like them...
they are more on the progressive metal side tbh, and Mike Portnoy is one hell of a good drummer...

What's wrong with change each album? Tool much?
No wonder you're DragonForce's biggest fan...

If a band changes it's style too much over the course of one album, some fans may not enjoy the new style I've turned away from some bands who changed from power metal to this new FAD mid-tempo melodic rock style that gets on my nerves If i wanted to listen to mid-tempo melodic rock, I'd look to what's called 'alternative rock' instead of once great power metal bands.

The thing about progressive metal band is that you shouldn't expect a consistency. You should expect scattering, progressive metal embodies EVERYTHING yet NOTHING.

Right, because what makes a band listenable is the inability to be versatile. -_- I like a variety with in my music.
To change each album doesn't exactly mean to change genre too, you know. You can change it up each album and still have a Power Metal sound.

That's you, not everyone else.
and Winterson, I wasn't referring necessarily to Dream Theater, but rather Metalhead123's comments to Jacko's opinion of Dream theater. I was just citing a general example set with my reference to some power metal bands changing to rock ;P

Well technically there needs to be change in light all the time. Not necessarily a change in sound but a change in... inspiration if you know what i'm talking about. I mean, i'd rather Sonata not release "Weballergy" over and over again with different lyrics and ending times and titles. Every band needs a uniqueness to every album while maintaining a Core to build upon. Dream theater's core is complex arrangements, high timbre vocals, and traditional solo usage. They are free to branch out, but it's their core that keeps them identifiable. Every band has this core, but some bands lose their core over time (cough* Metallicrap).
Alex just wanted to say that change is good, now there's a difference in change and complete change, complete change would be to lose every inch of the band's traditional identifiers, in the case of bands such as Sonata Arctica, Dream Theater, and Blind Guardian, that would be their vocalist, and amongst other bands are other things. That and there are a few people here that do have a problem with Dragonforce fans (as they are stereotyped to like repetition due to their band's mainstay example )
